West Cheshire - North East Wales Strategy

A group of local authorities and agencies on both sides of the North East Wales/West Cheshire boundary have jointly prepared a strategy to look at key sub regional planning issues that cut across the national boundary.

An earlier study, prepared by GVA Grimley was completed in 2003. It shows very strong linkages between the districts on both sides of the England/Wales border, particularly in relation to housing and employment.

Over 80% of the travel to work journeys in the sub-region start and finish in the area, showing it to be a highly functional area.

In January 2005 the partners commissioned consultants Hyder Consulting and Price Waterhouse Coopers to take the study forward and prepare a sub-regional strategy for the West Cheshire/North East Wales area.

A draft strategy was subject to public consultation between December 2005 and 17 February 2006.

A report on the draft strategy was made to Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council's Planning Committee on 14 February 2006. The recommendations were approved and Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council's formal comments were submitted to the Welsh Development Agency. The final version of the strategy was launched on 30 March 2007 at Airbus, Broughton, by Sue Essex, Minister for Finance, Local Government and Public Services, Welsh Assembly Government, on behalf of all partners.
