Garden Competition Winners 2008

Best GardenBest Garden 2008

Our winner this year was Ms Gresty of Tennyson Rd in Ellesmere Port. Our judge comments Garden competition winner 2008'this garden was unique in that it catered for a variety of uses and still managed to appear superbly maintained. Despite demands from children, the garden met all of the criteria and was an excellent example of how to create a rewarding place to sit and enjoy while still providing space for children and storage. Evidence of good planning and design, some good colour combinations on the planting and an equal split between annual, perennial and shrub interest were particular features.' Congratulations to Ms Gresty on a wonderful effort!

Best communal gardenBest communal gardenThis year's winner is Anne Jeffries of Frobisher Rd in Neston. A previous winner, our judge comments 'Establishes, wide range of plants giving year round interest. Good arrangement of containers to show plants to maximum effect. Use of height, contrast and complement in foliage and flower, use of varying levels and tiered effect to give an intimate, lush feel to the space - all very well presented with high standards of plant care and knowledge demonstrated.'
Best hanging basketBest hanging basket 2008A previous winner, Mr Fullerton of Stanney Close in Neston has excelled with his baskets once again. Our judge says: ' 5 baskets entered -very good range of plants with some unusual specimens on display. Entrant showed good plant knowledge, a positive attitude to using a range of plants in containers, and successfully arranged the display to maximum effect in a very small space with easterly orientation.'
Best plantspersonBest Plantsperson 2008Mrs Ogilvy has done it again! Her garden is a delight. Our judge comments 'The knowledge, horticultural expertise and enthusiasm shone through from the entrant. Use of plants as tools to create effects was unique in the competition, as was the understanding of how to display plants to best effect. Level of understanding of how to care for and propagate a range of plants including some tender species, is very impressive. Very well done.'

We would like to thank all the entrants to the competition for their efforts and time. We particularly welcome the newcomers to the competition who, in their first year, have raised the bar for all competitors - we are looking forward to your submissions for 2009.

A very worthy effort from all concerned in what has been a difficult year for gardening - thoroughly well done.

We would like to thank the Burleydam Garden Centre in Little Sutton for their kind sponsorship of our gardening competition.
