A history of Whitby Park

Originally a stately home and gardens for the Grace family, Whitby Park was sold to the local council in the 1930s. The council paid well-known landscape gardener T.H. Mawson to remodel the grounds, while it took over the hall as offices.

But as the town of Ellesmere Port expanded, the council outgrew its offices and eventually moved out. By the 1990s the building was put up for sale and boarded up. A buyer could not be found and instead the building, one of the oldest in Ellesmere Port, fell into disrepair.

In 2003, the borough council secured over a million pounds of National Heritage Lottery Funding to restore many of the parks historical features including Whitby Hall and reinstatement of the panel garden and avenue. Further improvements were also completed to the bowling green, Community Garden, a new school room, drainage improvements, lighting and soft landscaping.

Whitby Hall is now home to Action Transport Theatre and the old stables are used as offices, including by the local MP Andrew Miller.
