Meet our dog warden

I have been the dog warden since 1981. I enjoy my work very much as it offers different challenges every day - no two days are the same.

Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council's Dog Warden Frank WoodlandI enjoy meeting and talking to the public and helping to solve their problems and concerns about the borough's dogs.

My day starts at 8.15 am when I check my answer machine for any overnight callers.

My time in the office is spent replying to calls, updating the office complaints database and talking to other officers about investigations I'm working on.

My plans for the day can change at a moment's notice if the police or RSPCA has an urgent problem.

We deal with about 1,500 telephone calls and complaints a year from members of the public, ranging from dog fouling, stray and noisy dogs to animal welfare.

I usually work alone in investigating complaints and dealing with the public.

Last year I collected 142 stray dogs - 49 of these were later claimed by their owners and the rest were housed in the kennels for re-homing by Heswall Animal Rescue.

Dog baring teethLocally just under 100 dogs have no home.

All dogs should have identification discs bearing the owners' details on their collars.

This can help me a great deal if I pick the dog up because if the owner can be traced I can return the dog to them.

If the owner can't be traced the dog will be taken to the kennels.

The owner will then have to pay a £40 fine plus all the kenneling costs.

For the rest of the day I deal with complaints relating to noisy dogs, dog fouling and installing dog fouling bins and signs.

The council has nearly 100 dog bins around the borough for dog owners to put their dogs' waste in.

I appreciate those dog owners who use these bins but unfortunately there are those who allow their dogs to foul without picking it up.

I understand the annoyance this causes people and those irresponsible dog owners should think about what it feels like to remove dog mess from their or their children's shoes - it is not nice.

Be sure the council will take action against dog owners who allow their dogs to foul in public.

But we need the public's co-operation and help.

I usually try to get to the office at lunchtime to check for any new messages and deal with anything that's come up.

In a day I can be asked to patrol anywhere from Ince to Parkgate.

Around 4.15 pm I return to the office to catch up on phone calls and any paperwork before finishing for the day at 5pm.

As a dog warden I deal with some distressing situations, however I get a lot of job satisfaction doing what I do.

I particularly enjoy seeing the look on peoples' faces when I'm able to reunite lost dogs with their owners.

If members of the public wish to conatct me they can call 0151 356 6734 and pass on their details and I will phone them when I get back to the office.

Details of dogs that I pick up are published on the website - click below fto see them:

You could re-home an abandoned dog if you contact Heswall Animal Rescue on 0151 342 5139.

However remember a dog is for life.

Or if you would like to make a donation to the Rescue, as it relies on money from the public to operate, contact them on the same number.
