You and your family may wish to purchase a memorial at some time. Hopefully when you are ready to purchase a memorial if you follow the advice given you will find that a memorial mason of your choice installs your memorial to your satisfaction. Information relating to the positioning and installation of memorials within differing sections of the cemetery is contained on the Bereavement Services Homepage, please refer to the relevant area in which your grave space is positioned i.e. Traditional or Lawned burial areas. by clicking on the link below:-
The grave owner is the only person entitled to authorise a memorial mason to apply to the Council for works to be carried out either to an existing headstone or to install a new memorial. Memorial masons are aware that memorials cannot be installed on traditional burial areas until the grave space has fully settled, this takes approximately six months from the date of burial. This requirement does not apply to graves situated within lawned areas of the cemetery.
The Council has Cemetery Rules and Regulations that stipulate the maximum permissible size of memorials that can be approved. Details of these requirements can be obtained from the Bereavement Services Manager or from an approved memorial mason.
When you have decided upon the memorial of your choice, the memorial mason on behalf of his client (you) will submit a memorial application to the Council for approval. The application will be vetted in compliance with the Regulations and will be approved accordingly. Such an application will incur a memorial application fee. The fee for this is normally included in the final account that the memorial mason forwards to his client. A permit document is issued to the memorial mason; this document allows the memorial mason to carry out the work as requested by the grave owner. It is a condition of the permit document that the grave number and section letter is clearly inscribed on the memorial.
