The Pioneers statue celebrates the canal builders who founded Ellesmere Port and was cast in bronze by Liverpool artist Stephen Broadbent.

Local air quality is monitored around the clock using a range of sophisticated 'real-time' analysers as well as a network of simpler diffusion tubes.
Diffusion tubes are very useful for air quality monitoring as they can be fixed to lamp-posts and building facades close to the source of pollution. We have been using them since 1986 and currently use almost 30 tubes, at a range of locations across the borough, to monitor nitrogen dioxide and benzene.
Real-time equipment - consisting of two mobile stations and two Opsis analysers, is used to monitor nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, particulate matter and ozone. Wind speed, direction and air temperature data are also collected. The Opsis system uses intense beams of light to measure pollution concentrations across the rooftops in Ellesmere Port. Mobile stations allow us to assess hotspots and to gather information about background pollution in the area.
An 'EnviMan' database collects data from the analysers several times a day and then sends information out to the website and public display units. Click on the link below to view a flowchart of this process-
