Air Quality - Sulphur dioxide (SO2)

SO2 is a gas that is formed by the combustion of fossil fuels that contain sulphur. Common sources are coal, heavy oils, and diesel. Therefore SO2 is formed in vehicle exhausts, industrial boilers, coal fired power stations, domestic coal fires and oil fired central heating.

Visit the NAEI website for information on the national emissions of SO2. You can discover more about industrial SO2emissions on the Environment Agency's pollution inventory

SO2 is an irritant and may cause breathing difficulties in asthma sufferers at high concentrations. A 15-minute objective has been set to minimise the health effects on vulnerable groups. See our National Air Quality Standards page. SO2 is also the main component of acid rain. Visit Enviropedia for more information on SO2.

Three automatic "real-time" analysers monitor SO2around the clock. SO2 levels over the last seven days

The graph below shows how ambient SO2has declined since the installation of our Opsis monitoring system in 1995.
