Air Quality - Benzene

Benzene (C6H6) is a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) which is associated with the use and production of petrol and other oil-based products.  It is present at  low levels in petrol and hence vehicle exhaust fumes.; Emissions of benzene have fallen significantly in recent years due to the introduction of catalytic converters and vapour recovery systems at petrol stations.

Occupational studies have shown that benzene may cause cancer. For this reason, a National Air Quality Objective of 5 micrograms per cubic metre has been set at which there is an exceedingly small risk to health.

For more detailed information about VOCs visit the Atmospheric Research and Information Centre website.

The council has been monitoring benzene since 2000. The graph below shows the long term averages for benzene monitored using diffusion tubes.
