Traffic

Road vehicles emit a number of air pollutants including NOx, CO, HC and PM. Because these pollutants are released close to ground level, traffic is the largest source of pollution in urban areas.

Since catalytic converters were introduced in the early 1990s there has been a dramatic improvement in exhaust emissions. The graph below shows the past, present and future predictions of NOx from road vehicles. Although a modern car produces a fraction of the pollution that an equivalent model did in the 1970s, there are now many more cars on the road, making more frequent trips.
