Housing and council tax benefit

Housing costs are a large part of your weekly expenses. If you are on a low income, you may be able to claim housing and/or council tax benefit which can mean up to 100% off your rent and council tax bills. You don't need to be unemployed to qualify, hundreds of working people are eligible to claim.

If you're just starting or returning to work after a break of more than 26 weeks you could get your existing housing and council tax benefit extended to help you through the first four weeks, even if you're on a high income.

If you have less than £16,000 of savings you could qualify for help.

Some types of income don't affect your housing and council tax benefit, for example, disability living allowance and attendance allowance. However, the council's benefits office still needs to see your books or award letters.

Also, council tax rebates can be awarded if you share your home with another adult (other than a spouse) who is on a low income, as long as this person is not your tenant or boarder e.g. if your son or daughter comes to live with you. Your income doesn't count when deciding whether you're eligible for this 'second adult rebate', it's only the other adult's income that we need to know about.

To find out more about housing and council tax benefits and rebates phone 0151 356 6789 and ask to speak to the benefits office.

If you are housebound, our benefits advisor may be able to visit your home to discuss what benefits you are entitled to. Please click the link below for more details or phone 0151 356 6607.
